REU LinemenThe Distribution System Group of the Electric Utility is responsible for the distribution system power lines, meters, service connections, and all hardware, both underground and overhead, which carry energy from the power source to Redding's homes and businesses. The Distribution System Group is tasked with ensuring safe electric service reliability and providing responsive developer/customer service. This includes all field support and engineering/planning services necessary to assist customers' connections to the City's electric system. We are proud of our history of superior reliability and high quality customer service and believe that such value is based on the continuing efforts -- all day, every day - of our dedicated staff.

Redding owns and operates a looped 115kV system which delivers energy to eleven 115/12kV distribution substations that step the voltage down to 12kV for delivery to the City's customers. All City electric substations have loop service. Thus, if one source fails, a remaining source will provide uninterrupted power to the electric system greatly benefiting electric power-dependent residential, commercial, and industrial customers. In total, Redding's distribution system has 67.3 miles of 115kV local transmission lines and approximately 610 miles of overhead and underground 12kV distribution lines. The map below shows the City's 115KV transmission lines and substations

Delivery of all power from outside the City is made to Redding at the Airport 230/115kV transmission substation and at the Keswick Dam switch yard. The City jointly owns the Airport substation with the Western Area Power Administration (Western). Western owns and operates the Keswick switching substation. The Redding Electric distribution system has continued to expand since its inception in 1920. The following table shows the most recent historic growth of Redding's electric distribution system. The City's distribution system is rated at either 12kV or 115kV.
